What the Asset Administration Shell is used for

  • Digital Product Passport (DPP) EU compliance

The EU is gradually introducing digital product passports under the Ecodesign Regulation. The Asset Administration Shell is an obvious technical format for providing the required product data in machine-readable form.

  • Vendor-independent data exchange across the entire product lifecycle

Datasheets, documentation, operating data and carbon footprint are held in standardised submodels. Manufacturers, machine builders and operators exchange them without maintaining a separate format for each partner.

  • Meeting Manufacturing-X requirements

Manufacturing-X and Catena-X rely on the Asset Administration Shell for data exchange across the supply chain. Adopting it early lets you participate in these data spaces without rebuilding later.

  • IEC 63278

What is the Asset Administration Shell?

The Asset Administration Shell (AAS), Verwaltungsschale in German, is the standardised digital twin of a product, machine or component. It was developed within Plattform Industrie 4.0; today the Industrial Digital Twin Association (IDTA) maintains the specifications, and it is standardised as IEC 63278. An Asset Administration Shell bundles all information about an asset in uniformly structured submodels, such as the digital nameplate, technical data, documentation, operating data or carbon footprint. Manufacturers, machine builders and operators can then exchange this data in machine-readable form.

How the Asset Administration Shell is used in the IIoT

The most important driver at present is the EU digital product passport. The Ecodesign Regulation gradually requires machine-readable product information for more and more product groups, starting with the battery passport. The Asset Administration Shell is an obvious technical format for providing this data. It also simplifies the handover of documentation and master data when buying a machine, automatic configuration of components in engineering, data exchange in data spaces such as Catena-X and Manufacturing-X, and calculating product carbon footprints along the supply chain.

How an Asset Administration Shell is structured

Each Asset Administration Shell belongs to exactly one asset and has a unique identifier. It contains submodels that the IDTA standardises as templates, so that, for example, a digital nameplate is structured the same way at every manufacturer. Shells exist as a type, meaning for a product model, and as an instance, meaning for a single device with a serial number. Technically, they are exchanged either as a file in AASX format or provided via a server with a standardised API. Tools such as the AASX Package Explorer and Eclipse BaSyx help with creation and operation.

Asset Administration Shell or OPC UA?

Both describe information about machines but address different points. OPC UA is designed for communication during operation, meaning current measurements and states directly from the controller. The Asset Administration Shell covers the entire lifecycle, from planning through purchase and commissioning to maintenance and recycling, and also contains static information such as documents and certificates. The two complement each other: an Asset Administration Shell can reference live data from an OPC UA server.

What to consider when introducing it

Start by establishing which submodels customers, legislators or partners actually require, and for which products first. Then clarify where the data comes from, usually PLM, ERP and product data management, and how it can flow automatically into the shell instead of being maintained by hand. Also important are the choice between file and server solutions, handling access rights for confidential data and alignment with the requirements of the digital product passport.
