What mioty is used for
LPWAN alternative to LoRaWAN with greater robustness in electrically noisy industrial environments
mioty was developed by Fraunhofer IIS for environments in which other radio systems lose packets. In halls with drives, welding equipment and lots of metal, data arrives more reliably.
Telegram splitting for reliable transmission
Each message is split into many short sub-packets sent on different frequencies at different times. Even if some are disrupted, the message can be fully reconstructed.
What is mioty?
mioty is a radio standard from the LPWAN (Low Power Wide Area Network) family, developed by Fraunhofer IIS and standardised by ETSI as TS 103 357. Like LoRaWAN, mioty operates licence-free in Europe in the sub-GHz range around 868 MHz and is designed for battery-powered sensors that send small amounts of data over long distances. Its core is telegram splitting: each message is split into many short sub-packets sent on different frequencies at different times. The mioty Alliance promotes its adoption.
How mioty is used in the IIoT
mioty is particularly suited to environments where many radio systems operate simultaneously or strong electromagnetic interference is present, such as production halls with drives, welding equipment and lots of metal, chemical parks or densely built-up areas. Typical applications are condition monitoring of motors and pumps, fill levels, temperature and pressure in process plants, remote meter reading and monitoring of extensive industrial sites. Because one base station can serve very many sensors at the same time, mioty pays off especially with large volumes.
How a mioty network is structured
A mioty network consists of sensors with a mioty radio module, one or more base stations and a service center that receives, decrypts and forwards the messages to applications. The base station reassembles the sub-packets into the complete message, even if some of them were disrupted. Data reaches the IoT platform via MQTT or API. As with LoRaWAN, you run the network on your own site, without per-device fees to a network operator.
mioty or LoRaWAN?
Both standards pursue the same goal but differ in transmission. LoRaWAN is much more widespread, with a large selection of sensors, gateways and network servers. Thanks to telegram splitting, mioty is more robust against interference and collisions and can serve more devices per base station. If you have a noisy industrial environment or very many sensors, mioty deserves serious consideration; if you mainly want choice and off-the-shelf sensors, LoRaWAN usually gets you there faster.
What to consider when choosing
The most important point is the availability of suitable sensors, since the range is smaller than for LoRaWAN. Check early whether off-the-shelf mioty sensors exist for the planned measurements or whether retrofit solutions are needed. Also consider the manufacturer and operating model of the base station, integration with your IoT platform, and an on-site radio test that shows robustness in the specific environment.
