Specialized Platforms: Ready-Made IIoT Solutions for One Task
Specialized platforms are IoT solutions tailored to one industry, one business function or a single problem. Sensors, analytics logic and user interface are prepared for exactly that task. They deliver results quickly but cover little outside their domain, so they usually complement a general-purpose platform.

What to look for
What defines a specialized platform
A specialized platform focuses on one problem and goes very deep. Instead of an empty toolkit, it comes with ready-made models, key figures and workflows drawn from many projects in exactly that field. Typical areas are condition monitoring of pumps, motors and fans, control of automated guided vehicles in intralogistics, energy and meter data, and production planning. Matching sensors or gateways are often part of the package, so the solution starts without major integration work.
Examples from the network are Schaeffler with a platform for condition monitoring of rotating equipment, SYNAOS with an intralogistics platform for material flow and fleet control, and RIZM for capturing and analyzing energy and meter data.
How it differs from other platform types
The main reason to choose one is its focus on a single problem. Manufacturer-owned platforms concentrate on one vendor's equipment, while specialized platforms concentrate on one task, often regardless of the equipment manufacturer. Vendor-neutral platforms and hyperscalers are broad but require more configuration of your own before they deliver comparable business value. Outside their domain, specialized platforms offer little flexibility.
What to look for when choosing one
What matters is how well the platform covers the specific problem: references in comparable plants, the quality of the analytics models and the effort needed to install sensors. Open interfaces such as MQTT, OPC UA or a REST API are just as important so that results flow into overarching dashboards, maintenance systems or ERP. Companies that use several specialized platforms should plan a shared data layer early to avoid isolated solutions.
A typical solution example is a plant that retrofits wireless vibration sensors on critical pumps and fans. The specialized platform analyzes the data with prepared models and reports developing bearing damage along with recommended actions, without the need for an in-house data science team. Another example is a warehouse that coordinates automated guided vehicles from different manufacturers through a shared intralogistics platform, reducing empty runs and waiting times.
Frequently asked questions about specialized platforms
What kinds of IIoT solutions are there?
IIoT solutions range from individual connected sensors to complete platforms. Specialized solutions cover one task, such as condition monitoring, energy monitoring, intralogistics, asset tracking or production planning. General-purpose platforms, by contrast, connect any device and can be configured for many tasks. In practice, companies often combine both: a general data platform and specialized solutions for their most important problems.
What is meter data management?
Meter data management (MDM) is the collection, validation, storage and analysis of readings from electricity, gas, water and heat meters. Data arrives automatically from meters, smart meters and sensors, is checked for plausibility and organized by asset, cost center or site. The result is load profiles, consumption reports and key figures, for example for an energy management system under ISO 50001.
What is intralogistics software?
Intralogistics software controls and monitors the flow of materials within a plant or warehouse. This includes assigning jobs to automated guided vehicles and autonomous mobile robots, managing storage locations and linking to ERP and warehouse management. Specialized intralogistics platforms coordinate vehicles from different manufacturers and make transports, stock levels and bottlenecks visible in real time.
What is material flow control?
Material flow control is the software layer that assigns transport orders in a warehouse or plant and monitors how they are carried out. It sits between the warehouse management system or ERP and the material handling equipment, such as conveyors, stacker cranes or automated guided vehicles. It decides which goods move when and along which route, and reports progress back to the higher-level systems.
When is a specialized platform better than a general IoT platform?
A specialized platform pays off when a clearly defined problem needs to be solved quickly and the necessary domain knowledge is not available in-house. It comes with models and workflows that a general platform would take months to develop. If many different tasks need to run on one data foundation, a general platform is the better base, complemented by specialized solutions.
